Power to Be Humble
By Suzanne Leitz |
God will never ask you to do something He
hasn't given you the power to accomplish.
For example, according to Proverbs 16:19,
Isaiah 57:15, James 4:6,10, Matthew 18:4 and Matthew
23:12, we know that it is God's will that we be humble.
What does it mean to be humble? Does being
humble mean we are powerless? Surely not. What good is a powerless Christian?
Therefore, let's look at God's Word to find out how we can become humble.
In 1 Peter 5:5 we are instructed to
"be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God
resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble." Verse 6 says,
"Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may
exalt you in due time."
OK, so we've been told to be humble and we've
been shown the advantage of doing so, but HOW do we be humble? Notice that
there is a colon at the end of verse 6, denoting continuance of that thought
in verse 7. So let's read verse 6 again and go right into verse 7 as
the author intended. "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand
of God, that he may exalt you in due time; CASTING ALL YOUR CARE UPON HIM; for
he careth for you."
There it is! We humble ourselves by casting all
our care on Him! You see, by casting our care on Him we are saying that we
can't take care of the problem in our own strength, but only through God can
the situation/problem/care be resolved. By casting your care on Him, you are
saying, "I'm not God in my life: GOD is God in my life." That's
humility.
It's so easy for us to take charge and take
control of our lives without consulting the One Who knows all. Psalm 37:5
says, "Commit your way to the Lord--roll and repose (each care of) your
load on Him; trust (lean on, rely on and be confident) also in Him, and He
will bring it to pass." (Amplified Bible)
According to Ephesians 6:10 we are to be
strong in the Lord and in the power of HIS might, not in the power of our own
might.
In casting our care on God, we are recognizing
His lordship in our lives and paving the way for His grace to come upon us.
