The Word Weapon
By Suzanne Leitz |
Ephesians 6:11-17 tells us to put on
the whole armor of God that we may be able to successfully stand up against
all the strategies and deceits of the devil, for we are not wrestling
against flesh and blood but against spiritual power." Therefore take up the
whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and
having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with
truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having
shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above
all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all
the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of
salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." (Ephesians
6:13-17.)
Did you notice that of the six pieces of
God's armor, five are defensive for protection and only one is offensive?
That one is the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God. This shows that the
Word is a powerful and effective force in our lives against evil. Indeed,
Hebrews 4:12 says that the Word of God is alive and powerful. Therefore,
when we find ourselves under attack by the devil, we can use the Word of God
to obtain victory in our lives.
For example, if we feel depression coming
against us and trying to settle in our spirits, we can say, "God is my glory
and the lifter up of my head. I cry to the Lord and He hears and answers me
out of His holy hill. I will rejoice in Him and be in high spirits. I will
be glad in the Lord and rejoice. Because I have loved righteousness, He has
anointed me with the oil of gladness." (Psalms 3:3-4; 9:2; 32:11; Hebrews
1:9.)
If it's fear that's trying to grip us or
rule our lives, we should quote 2 Timothy 1:7 saying, "God did not
give me a spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and of a sound mind. What
time I am afraid, I will trust in the Lord (Psalm 56:3). In God have
I put my trust and confident reliance; I will not be afraid. What can man do
to me? (Psalm 56:11)"
God's Word is alive and powerful and can be
a mighty force for victory in our lives if we will meditate upon it daily,
putting it into our hearts, believing it, acting on it, and using it in the
battle against evil, not relying on our strength, but being strong in the
Lord and in the power of HIS might.
